Do You Need a Doctor’s Permission Before Getting a Massage?
It’s a question we hear more often than you might think.
Recently we worked with a wonderful couple in their 90s. Both received a gentle therapeutic session from Senior Touch Massage Professionals. They both enjoyed it. They both felt the benefits.
But their reactions afterward were different.
His wife immediately said, “That felt great, let’s schedule weekly sessions.”
He said, “I loved it too… but I think I should get my doctor’s permission first.”
And that raises an interesting conversation.
Because many people assume massage therapy requires medical approval.
In reality, it doesn’t.
Massage Therapy Is Its Own Licensed Profession
Massage therapists operate under their own professional licensing and statutory guidelines. Our training, certifications, and continuing education are specifically designed to evaluate the body and provide safe, appropriate therapeutic care.
In other words, massage therapy is not regulated under a physician’s scope of practice.
Doctors are highly trained in diagnosing and treating disease, prescribing medications, and performing medical procedures. But massage therapy falls outside their licensing authority.
So while a doctor may offer a general opinion, they are not licensed to determine whether massage therapy is appropriate or not.
That responsibility belongs to the licensed massage therapist.
Safety Is Already Built Into Professional Practice
At Senior Touch Massage Professionals, every session begins with an evaluation.
We consider factors such as:
Age and mobility
Circulation and tissue health
Medications
Surgical history
Comfort levels and pain points
Especially with senior clients, our techniques are designed to be gentle, controlled, and adaptive to the individual.
For many people in their 80s and 90s, massage therapy can help with:
Circulation
Mobility
Joint comfort
Muscle tension
Overall relaxation and stress reduction
The goal is simple: help the body function more comfortably.
The Liability Question Most People Don’t Think About
Here’s something most people don’t realize.
Even if a doctor said massage was “safe,” the responsibility still falls on the licensed massage therapist performing the work.
That means we follow our own professional standards and insurance guidelines regardless of outside opinions.
In other words, the therapist performing the session is the one responsible for ensuring the care provided is safe and appropriate.
Why Some People Still Want Permission
The desire for medical approval usually comes from one place: caution.
Many seniors grew up in a time when doctors were viewed as the gatekeepers for every type of health decision.
And that mindset is understandable.
But modern healthcare now recognizes that many professions… physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and others… have their own licensing and professional standards.
Each profession evaluates and treats within its own scope of practice.
Listening to Your Body Matters
In the case of our 92-year-old client, he enjoyed the session and felt better afterward.
His wife recognized that benefit immediately and scheduled weekly sessions.
He simply wanted reassurance before continuing.
Both responses are perfectly human.
But the most important indicator is often the simplest one:
How did your body feel after the session?
For many seniors, regular therapeutic massage can become an important part of maintaining comfort, mobility, and overall quality of life.
The Bottom Line
Massage therapy doesn’t require a doctor’s permission.
It requires a licensed professional who understands how to work safely with the body.
At Senior Touch Massage Professionals, our focus is always the same:
Provide safe, gentle, therapeutic care designed specifically for the needs of seniors.
If you or a loved one are curious about whether massage therapy could help improve comfort, mobility, or circulation, we’re happy to answer your questions.
Because sometimes the best way to know if something helps…
…is simply to experience how much better you feel afterward.
