Healing Shouldn't Hurt: A Gentle Perspective on Gua Sha (Scraping)
Every few years, another bodywork trend captures attention on social media.
Recently, one of those techniques has been Gua Sha, often referred to as scraping therapy.
You'll see before-and-after photos showing deep red streaks across the back, neck, or shoulders. Some practitioners interpret those marks as evidence of toxins being released or restrictions being broken apart.
At Senior Touch Massage Professionals, we see things differently.
What Is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is a traditional East Asian technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to repeatedly stroke lubricated skin.
Many people report feeling temporary relief from muscle tension or stiffness afterward.
Some medical organizations, including the Cleveland Clinic, note that while research continues, Gua Sha may help some people with pain and circulation when performed appropriately.
That's an important distinction.
It may help.
But that doesn't mean it's appropriate for every person.
Our Philosophy Begins With the Tissue
At Senior Touch, we ask a simple question before using any technique:
"Does this respect the tissue?"
The body isn't a machine that needs to be forced into working.
It's a living system that responds to stress.
When tissues are repeatedly scraped until they become red or bruised, the body doesn't interpret that as healing.
It interprets it as injury.
The response is predictable:
Irritation → Inflammation → Swelling → Pressure → Pain
That's the body's natural protective response.
While inflammation has a role in healing after injury, intentionally creating tissue trauma isn't always the best path…especially for older adults.
Seniors Deserve a Different Approach
Most of our clients aren't elite athletes recovering from intense training.
They're people in their seventies, eighties, and nineties.
Their skin is thinner.
Their blood vessels are more fragile.
Many take blood thinners.
Many heal more slowly.
A technique that produces only mild redness in one person may create extensive bruising in another.
That's not a risk we're willing to take.
Healing Doesn't Require Breaking Things
One of the biggest myths in manual therapy is the idea that you have to "break up" tissue to make it healthier.
Modern understanding of connective tissue suggests it's far more adaptable than that.
Muscles relax.
The nervous system calms.
Movement improves.
Circulation changes.
None of those require damaging healthy tissue.
In our experience, the body responds remarkably well when it's treated with patience instead of force.
We Choose Comfort Over Drama
Social media loves dramatic before-and-after photos.
Big bruises.
Dark streaks.
Bold claims.
But our clients aren't looking for dramatic photographs.
They're looking for relief.
They're looking for better movement.
They're looking to enjoy time with grandchildren, take a walk, garden, or simply get out of bed without discomfort.
Those goals don't require visible trauma.
They require thoughtful care.
Respect First. Always.
This isn't about criticizing practitioners who use Gua Sha.
Every therapist develops a philosophy based on training, experience, and the clients they serve.
Our philosophy is simply different.
At Senior Touch Massage Professionals, we believe healing should support the body…not challenge it to recover from the treatment itself.
That's why we continue to focus on gentle, evidence-informed bodywork that promotes comfort, mobility, and function while respecting the integrity of the tissues.
Because sometimes the most effective therapy is also the gentlest.
And for the people we serve, that's exactly the point.
