Respect Matters: Why Surprise Massage Appointments Aren’t Aligned With Our Values

There’s a difference between giving someone a thoughtful gift… and making decisions for them without their input.

Recently, someone contacted Senior Touch wanting to schedule a massage for their 93-year-old grandmother as a surprise.

While the intention may have come from a loving place, we declined the appointment.

Why?
Because at Senior Touch, respect comes first.

We believe seniors deserve the dignity of choice.

Showing up as a stranger at someone’s home without their knowledge or consent doesn’t create comfort, trust, or safety. In many cases, it can actually create confusion, anxiety, or fear.

Our services are built around relationship, communication, and trust.

That means:

  • The senior knows who we are

  • The senior understands the service

  • The senior is comfortable with the visit

  • The senior willingly agrees to receive care

Massage for seniors isn’t like sending flowers or dropping off a gift basket.

For many older adults, especially those living alone or dealing with memory challenges, unexpected visitors can feel unsettling.
At Senior Touch, we don’t believe in forcing wellness on someone.

We believe in meeting people where they are.

That’s why we encourage families to involve their loved ones in the conversation.

Talk to them.

Explain the benefits.

Let them ask questions.

Allow them to decide.
When seniors feel heard and respected, they’re far more likely to enjoy the experience and receive the full benefit of the session.
Our goal has never been to simply “book appointments.”
Our goal is to help seniors feel safe, valued, comfortable, and cared for.

And that starts long before the massage begins.

Because dignity matters.

Respect matters.

And consent matters.

At Senior Touch, those aren’t just policies.

They’re values.
